Keyboard Shortcuts

I was disappointed at first. I wanted to be able to change pages while in full screen (as this is the only way to REALLY read the comics) but was unable too. I happened across the reviews and saw one that said you could assign keyboard shortcuts in the keyboard preference pane (under settings) I googled this, and was able to do this. Just by adding a shortcut labeled next page & previous page. That appears to be my biggest complaint, but because of Mac, I was able to essentially overcome that. Overall. GREAT APP.

Good app, but still needs work!

Ehon is a GOOD app. You will enjoy using it if you have as large of a comic collection as I do. The default "bookshelf" layout is exactly what I imagined. However there are a lot of minor problems, and a couple big ones with Ehon that keep it from delivering a GREAT experience to its users. Before discussing the flaws with the current version of Ehon (1.0.1), lets start with the positives. I love the "bookshelf" display for your comics. An elegant design is a nessecity for a great app in my opinion. The vast amount of user definable metadata is great. I like the tags feature as well. And though I havent been able to test it, the library sharing is a neat touch! After using the app for a few days now, I have noticed a few areas with room for improvement. The UI is good, but it could be better. Why can I not slide the selected comic sidebar out of sight for more bookshelf space? Why does the app have new folder/smart folder, import, read, share, and tags buttons at both the top AND bottom of the screen? I also noticed when reading a book in fullscreen mode, which isnt Mt. Lion friendly yet, that the scroll bar never fades away. Very distracting. The full screen control panel could be more responsive too. It feels a little slow. Also, more control via the preferences window is welcomed. All of the problems I have mentioned so far are to some degree nit picky, but Ehon has two more flaws that will annoy anyone attempting to use it as it is designed. Lots. The first being that the "reveal in finder" function does not work. What a basic function to be missing. The second, and by far the largest fault the app suffers is file management. Importing isnt hard, but getting your files to import CORRECTLY proved a challenge. Why does the "automatic issue number" feature not work if the folder name itself contains numbers? Thats buggy. Why do you not get a confirmation request window of some kind when deleting files, and why are files only deleted from your library and NOT your HD? This forces me to dig through chaotic directories to find the unneeded files. What a pain! For that matter, why are those directories not named after each comic series? I wish Ehon handled your comics more similar to how iTunes does your music. Ehon is a good app with some room to grow, but considering I paid nothing for it I think Im getting a lot of use out of it as is. P.S. Please get rid of that ugly "Sorry were empty" sign.

closest thing to ibooks Ive seen. Best app for reading books on a mac!

Ive looked around for weeks for a good epub/pdf reader that is comfortable to read on the screen. This is the best one by far.

Best of the best!

I am shocked that this seems to be the best of the available readers, being that it is free. It is essentially iTunes for your comics. The ONLY thing I would want to see added is a way to browse ones collections by publisher, and chronologically. Perhaps I am odd, but when tracking down my comics I find it really useful to see who published what, and when they were released. Other that this app is perfect. That being said, this app is still lightyears ahead of the competitors, and it’s free... so... It’s kinda hard to beat that.

Not perfect, but there are not many apps that can organize many formats

This is a pretty nice application for the big job it is trying to do - especially for the price. I was looking for an application that could organize all my ebooks in both PDF and EPUB formats and that allowed me to read them in the same application. I found it in this app. I would pay for this application and I would like to see it continue to improve. The interface is nice and easy to understand. It has been stable for me. The keyboard shortcut issue is easily solved. My only criticism is that it would be nice to have a 2-column view of my Epub documents so the line width is narrower. This is probably harder then it looks because I have seen EPUBs organized differently by different publishers. Okay, there are a few applications that can do what this one does, but their interfaces are not good.

Ugh. Cmon.

I opened this and dragged a book in and EW. Thats all. The sidebar shows individual pages instead of the ToC, the arrow keys dont turn the pages. And the UI around your book is so HUGE and in the way. Was there even full-screen capability? I didnt notice. I left the app pretty quickly. Buy Clearview instead. You wont be sad.

Support for right-to-left books!

I love UI of this software! Please support books which read from right to left for Japanese manga readers like me!!

Great and free

Its very good and its free. Its also fast. Download and try for yourself.

Almost there.

As previously stated, you can make your own keyboard shortcuts for reading in the System Preferences. Thats not really an issue. My biggest complaint is just lack of basic features like being able to reorganize folders and smart folders in a different order. Also, I would like the app to retain the dimensions I set it to every time I open it instead of going back to the default size. I also think it would be neat if the app visually showed you which comics you have read and/or which ones you are currently reading. Another cool feature is something I really like from Comic Zeal: have the background color automatically change based on the image. If the page of the comic has a black border, make the background black. If it has a white border, make it white. If it has a big firey explosion, make it red. A feature like this is small, but helps immerse the reader into the page. I will gladly rate this app 5 starts once they work out some of the kinks and add a few more features. Really make it stand out from the rest.

Beautiful Interface--Impractical Ereading Functionality

Of all all the ereader snapshots Ive perused Ehon is hands down the most asthetically plesasing. It is, however, lacking in some very basic ereader functionality. If youre reading anything beyond comic books (like most of us), you need the capability to quickly get to specific pages. There is no way to do that here. Even the stripped down, bare bones kindle and nook for mac allows you to enter a specific page number. Theres also no way to enter notes or annotations. Develpers, please address these basic issues in your next update. Thank you!

Needs search capability

I decided to give this app a try. The first thing I imported was a manual. I wanted to look something up and found there is no way to search for text. It seems odd to me that this is not a feature in Ehon. Otherwise, it seems like a nice app.

Best comics reader I know of

The one I was using cant handle retina display but even if it could I would use Ehon. It has iPhoto or Preview-like controls and Im very used to those.

Near Perfect

This app is nearly perfect, and amazing, and makes me so happy to own a mac again. Its exactly what I needed and does a brilliant job of organizing massive comic collections. Im extremely happy. Its true that it could benefit from pulling metadata and keyboard navigation controls, but this is the most elegant solution Ive seen thus far. Id be willing to donate to this app developer to see further development. Thank you to the developer for your time and talent and generosity in creating this.

Needs better ebook support

For pdfs and comics in cbr format, ehon is great. Not only does it import and render books in these formats well, but the interface is pleasant and the tagging capability is practical. However, I am really disappointed in ehons handling of ebooks in epub format. Ive managed to get one epub to import by running through some trickery in Calibre. Unfortunately, it wasnt really worth the effort because the book looks terrible in ehon. Each page is now extremely long and has no margins at all. The problem is that ehon wont import ebooks in epub properly, epubs that import well in the otherwise terrible Nook app. Id love ehon if I could import ebooks in epub and mobi format!

Great so far, just have one wish

This works great so far. My only wish is that it had a corresponding iPad app. If I could import my ebooks into the app on my computer, hit the share button, and then be able to simultaneously view them on my iPad then this would be a powerful app and I would give it 5 stars.

miss basic things

I miss keyboard shortcut to skip to next page next page bar appears over the comic.

Holy organization, Batman, this app is great!

I love that this app gives you the ability to organize your comics to the extent that it does, from series, volume, writers, characters--my only complaint is the lack of an "artist" field, and maybe the ability to add more than one writer/artist (as there tend to be multiple working on the same issue/run/etc). Im a huge art fan, and like finding artists that worked on certain series, etc. and having that option would make this app perfect beyond reason. This app is still nifty and handy as hell, so thank you for existing.

A great start!

I like this app, and I think if the developer had stuck with it, it would have turned into something amazing. As it is, I will probably be switching to one of the paid apps because the developer seems to have abandoned this project and it desperately needs some love to be perfect. I couldnt figure out the trackpad controls, so I had to click on buttons to change between pages. Very clunky. Not sure why it wouldnt use my trackpad gestures, as other apps have had no problem with them, but it may just be because some things are different in Mountain Lion and well .. this app wasnt designed with ML in mind.

Impressive

For someone who just started getting into digital comic collections, this is quite an impressive offering. Thanks!

darn good comic book reader

this is a pretty good comic book reader. my favorite comic book reader was ffview, until i updated to lion. once i updated it crashes constantly, so i had to find a new one. ehon seemed to be pretty good (i read a couple of reviews). i love the fact that i can import all my comic books and it organizes them well enough. any comic i want to read is just a search away. the largest problem that i have with the program is the navigation. though, once i got used to it navigation is easy. i personally use my track pad with 2 fingers to move up and down each page and keep the thumbnail of each page selected so i can switch pages with the up and down arrow. the trick is not to click in the main window. using this, navigation is pretty easy and convenient. the more and more i use ehon, the more i like to use it. i look forward to future updates with new features.
